What is Safety Glass?
Safety glass is designed to minimise the risk of injury if broken. Unlike standard float glass, safety glass is manufactured to comply with specific safety standards and performance requirements.
The two most common types of safety glass used in New Zealand are:
- Toughened Glass
- Laminated Glass
Both are classified as Grade A Safety Glass in accordance with AS/NZS 2208, but perform differently when subjected to impact or breakage.
What is toughened glass?
Toughened glass, sometimes referred to as tempered glass, is manufactured by heating the glass and rapidly cooling it during production.
This process significantly increases the strength of the glass, making it much stronger than standard annealed glass.
If broken, toughened glass shatters into thousands of small blunt fragments rather than large sharp shards, helping reduce the risk of serious injury.
What is laminated glass?
Laminated glass consists of two or more panes of glass bonded together using a durable plastic interlayer.
If the glass is broken, the interlayer helps hold the glass together rather than allowing it to shatter and fall away. This helps improve safety while also providing additional security and acoustic performance benefits.
